Phineas Sprague was born in Malden, Massachusetts, in 1700,[1] the son of Phineas and Elizabeth Sprague. He grew up on the family homestead on Ell Pond, in what is now Melrose, Mass.
He married Rebecca Lynde, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Tufts) Lynde, in 1723.[2]
Phineas was a prominent man in town affairs, including being a lieutenant of the local militia for many years. He also served as a tithing-man in 1728 and a constable in 1745.
Both Phineas and his son Phineas Jr. served as privates in Capt. Benjamin Blaney's Co. of Militia that marched to Watertown, Mass. on the alarm of April 19, 1775, starting the Revolutionary War. They both served for one day. Phineas Sr. was 75 years of age at the time. It was later written: "He was quite advanced in years at the breaking out of the war; but was one of the individuals connected with Cap't. Hatch's Company, mentioned as starting for Concord in the night, after having lain at Beecham's Point during the day. Mr. Sprague was very deaf, but his heart was as impervious to fear as his ears were to sound, and when the rest of his party were flying from the view of the enemy, he was seen upon a piece of rising ground swinging his hat and shouting victory."[3]
Phineas died 2 months later. He was originally buried at Bell Rock Cemetery in Malden, but his headstone was later moved to Forest Dale Cemetery, all in Malden. [4] [5]
