Nicholas was the son of John Towneley and Isabel Sherburne.[1][2][3] The contract for his parents' marriage was signed in March 1445[4][5] and he had at least two older siblings, so he was almost certainly born after 1447.
He married twice, his wives being Lettice, daughter and coheir of William Talbot of Shuttleworth, Lancashire (by whom he had no children) and Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Catherall and widow of William Tempest of Broughton in Craven, Yorkshire.[3] He and Elizabeth had at least two children:
In 1474 his brother Richard gave him lands at Hapton and Birtwistle.[7]
Nicholas was the ancestor of the Towneleys of Royle, Lancashire.[3]
Research Notes
The 1613 Visitation of Lancashire names just one wife for Nicholas: "Letice Shuttleworth, dau. and heire of ... Shuttleworth."[8] It may well have confused Lettice's geographical origins and the place where she inherited property with her family name.

“Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected with the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Volume 82“ Visitation of Lancashire by Richard St. George, 1613 page 99 identifies Nicholas’ wife as Letice Shuttleworth dau. and heire of Shuttleworth, and wyddowe of ...Ashton of Chaderton, a son Richard Towneley of Shuttleworth = Margaret, dau. and heire of ...Clark of Royle, and a grandson Nicholas Townley (1505-1546)
Thanks, Maddy. I have consulted Dugdale's 1664-5 Visitation of Lancashire, which gives two wives for the Nicholas of this profile:
- in the pedigree for Towneleys of Towneley, Lancashire of it states that he married "Elizabeth, widow of William Tempest of Broughton in Craven, Co. York": William Dugdale. The Visitation of the County Palatine of Lancaster, made in the Year 1664-5, volume 3, Chetham Society, 1873, pp. 304-305, https://archive.org/details/visitationcount00raingoog/page/n136/mode/2up
- in the pedigree for Towneleys of Royle, which is headed by the Nicholas of this profile, it names as wives "Leititia, daughter of William Talbot of Shuttleworth" [which would make Shuttleworth not her last name at birth] and "Elizabeth, daughter of Richard Catherall, esq., widow of Richard Tempest of Broughton, co. York, esq." (the same Elizabeth referred to in the Towneley of Towneley pedigree): ibid, p. 312, https://archive.org/details/visitationcount00raingoog/page/n144/mode/2up
Dugdale states that the Towneleys of Royle descended from the marriage to Elizabeth Catherall, not from Letitia, and it also gives an additional generation missing from the pedigree in the book you have given a link to, which derives from an earlier 1613 Visitation: F R Raines (ed.). The Visitation of the County Palatine of Lancaster, made in the year 1613, by Richard St George, Esq., Chetham Society, 1871, p. 99. https://archive.org/details/visitationcount08britgoog/page/n137/mode/2up?q=towneley
I have added a research note and amended what is said about marriage. I have also done some work on family.
