Biography

John Coke was the second son of Richard Coke of Trusley and Mary Sacheverell.

He was educated at Westminster School in London and Trinity College, Cambridge.

John married firstly to Marie Powell in 1604. She died in March 1624. He married secondly in November 1624 to Joan Lee, widow of William Gore of Tottenham.

John had a long and highly successful civil service career as well as being a Member of Parliament from 1621 to 1629. He was knighted in 1624.

John died at his wife's home in Tottenham, after he had been forced from his home Melbourne Hall after it was looted by both Royalists and Parliamentarians in the Civil War.
