As noted in a biography written by John Paul Hoxie, Abner was a blacksmith and had a blacksmith shop in Orneville where wagons and teamsters stopped hauling loads to and from Kathadin Iron Works.
Abner travelled to Cooksville Wisconsin and then on to California to pan for gold. Family history shows that Abner returned to Orneville Maine in 1854 and died four days after his arrival.
