Biography

Mary Ellen Quinlan; known as Ella O'Neill (August 13, 1857 – February 28, 1922) was the mother of playwright Eugene O'Neill and wife of actor James O'Neill. She was the inspiration for many of Eugene O'Neill's stories.

Mary was born in 1857. She was the daughter of Bridget (née Lundigan) and Thomas Quinlan, both Irish immigrants from County Tipperary. Mary Ellen was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where her father was a successful businessman and real estate investor.[1][2]

James Oneil 51 yrs, actor, emigrated in 1854, wife Ella 39 yrs, married 22 yrs, mother of 3, 2 still living, James H. 21 yrs, Eugene G. 11 yrs, resided in 1900 in ward 5, New London, Connecticut. [3]

She passed away in 1922.
