Research Notes
Her daughter's death record gives her maiden name as Moody, as does her son's delayed birth record, which is attached to this profile. Other records show her last name at birth as Gilreath, for which I can find no supporting evidence.
There are three records that identify her last name as Moody. One is the aforementioned delayed birth record for son James Wheeler, and the other two were in death or burial records. All three records were generated after Belle's death. Her daughter Mary Ellen's death record says her mother's maiden name was Moody and daughter Martha Abbygail [Adkins] Smith has a social security record that identifies her mother as Arzonia B. Noody [sic]. James Wheeler Adkins' delayed birth record identifies his mother as Belle Moody.
Delayed Birth Record for Son James Wheeler Adkins[9]
Name: James Wheeler Adkins
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 1 Mar 1895
Birth Place: Moodyville, Fentress
Father: Sabe Adkins
Mother: Belle Moody
This last record says that James was born in Moodyville, which may or may not be coincidental with his mother's last name at birth.
In reviewing genealogical records for Fentress County, Tennessee, there were both Gilreath and Moody families from that area. Of note is William Alexander Gilreath, whose second wife was Rhoda Moody. If Belle was the daughter of William and Rhoda, that could explain some of the confusion about her last name at birth, which was in some records listed as Moody, which would have actually been her mother's last name at birth.
Another couple who are sometimes attributed to Belle Adkins as her parents were William T. Wilson and Missouri Adkins. At first I ruled out this possibility because of Missouri's age, but then I discovered that there is a birth year discrepancy for her of about 10 years. Some records show her as being born in 1854, while others show 1846. This simple transposition of numbers plus a typo makes a significant difference in the possibility Missouri Adkins being Belle's mother. Born in 1854, that made Missouri a mother at age 13. Born in 1846 makes her a mother at 21. The birth year 1846 is attributed to Missouri Adkins Wilson in the 1880 census, and William Wilson is identified as Belle's stepfather. See: https://tinyurl.com/yh3e2473. Missouri England, born in 1846, married Willis Adkins on 28 May 1861 in Roane County, Tennessee. See: https://tinyurl.com/yjlqnryt. It is the widow Missouri Adkins who later married William Wilson.
While this solves the mystery of the Missouri's age, it doesn't explain how Galreath or Moody came to be associated with Belle as possible last names at birth if she were born an Adkins. All this means is that although one mystery has been solved, it may be for a person not related to the A. Belle Moody of this profile. The personal details for two women who were at different times known as Belle Adkins have been co-mingled.
Belle may have been born in another state, but these research notes thus far do not consider that possibility. All census records from 1900 to 1940 show her birth place as Tennessee.
