Biography
Robert Borden Forbes was born the son of Robert Duncan Forbes and Mary Elizabeth Plant.[1] He married Norma Seaman Clarke in 1935.[2]
He was a Major in the North Shore Regiment during the Second World, and was awarded the Military Cross for actions during Operation Overlord (D-Day) as commander of 'B' Company.[3][4] He also received the Distinguished Service Order.[5]
Supplement to the London Gazette, 31 August, 1944:
On 6 June 1944 Major Forbes was the Officer Commanding the left assault Company of the North Shore (New Brunswick) Regiment which made the initial assault on the Nan Red Beach at Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer.
On landing he found that the strong point commanding this beach was more strongly held than had been anticipated and he also realized during the "run-in" that certain portions of the "softening-up" fire support was not forthcoming.
Despite these very material set backs this officer through his coolness, initiative and determination fought his company through to their objective and finally seized the strong point and its many fire points. Had this portion of the beach not been captured the landing of many serials would have been very costly. His personal display of cool bravery and decision held his company together as a fighting team.
