Biography

Herbert was born 23 July 1908 in Fall River, Massachuestts, the son of Francois Santerre and Georgianna Bouchard.^[1]

By age 17, Herbert was working as crew on the ship Swiftscout. The manifest listed his age as 19, but he was really only 17. Did he lie about his age to get work with the shipping company? Two years later, he was on the ship Swiftlight, which sailed to Aruba. By 1932, he was still working in the merchant marines, on a ship that had traveled to Plymouth, England and Cherbourg, France. His job was listed as "cadet." He was single and listed his address as Fall River, MA.

In 1937, Herbert and Emily were married in San Antonio. Notice that a marriage license had been issued to them appeared in the San Antonio newspaper on 18 July 1937.^[2]

Herbert must have worked for the merchant marines or for various shipping companies, as he worked on ships sailing throughout the Northern Pacific. Destinations included Japan, Korea, and Hawaii. He mostly traveled out of San Francisco.

After Emily's death, Herbert married two more times.

He died 5 August 1987 in Ventura, California, at the age of 79.^[3][4][5]
