James Derry was baptized in Egloshayle,[1] Cornwall, on 4 April 1813. The baptism register entry says that his parents were named James and Elizabeth, his father was a miller, and the family lived at Trevilder.[2]
Trevilder is about 3.5 kilometres due east of Wadebridge.[3][4]
James's parents were the miller James Derry and spinster Betsey Olver who were married in Egloshayle on 7 November 1805.[5] James was the sixth of their thirteen children.
James Derry married Elizabeth Whitford Williams in St Issey[6] on 21 October 1839. The groom was a bachelor of full age, was a miller, lived at Pencarrow Mill, and was the son of a miller named James Derry. The bride was a spinster of full age, lived at Bleble, and was the daughter of a yeoman named Hugh Williams. The marriage was by licence, bride and groom both signed, and the witnesses were Richard Williams and Catherine Williams, who also both signed.[7]
Blable is a farm in St Issey, about five kilometres southwest of Wadebridge.[8] Pencarrow Mill is about 3.4 kilometres east-south-east of Wadebridge,[9] and about 1.7 kilometres west of Pencarrow House.[10]
There are baptism records for nine children of miller James Derry and his wife Elizabeth:
Grace Williams Derry, daughter of James Derry and Elizabeth Whitford Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 3 November 1840;[11]
Hugh Williams Derry, son of James Derry and Elizabeth Whitford Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 5 May 1844;[12]
Elizabeth Witford Derry, daughter of James Derry and Elizabeth Witford Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 24 May 1847;
Mary Derry, daughter of James Derry and Elizabeth Whitford Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 15 October 1848;
James Derry, son of James Derry and Elizabeth Whitford Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 5 November 1850;
David Derry, son of James and Elizabeth Derry of Egloshayle, was baptized in St Issey 26 February 1852;[13]
Francis Derry, son of James and Elizabeth Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 16 October 1853;
James Derry, son of James and Elizabeth Derry of Pencarrow Mill, was baptized in Egloshayle on 15 January 1856;
Catharine Derry, daughter of James and Elizabeth Derry of Cafa Mill, was baptized in Fowey on 24 January 1858.
The Egloshayle baptism register for the years 1833 to 1989 and the Fowey[14] baptism register for the years 1851 to 1967 are available at Kresen Kernow,[15][16] but apparently there are no online digitized images available. Transcriptions of the records (up to 1922) are included in the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks database,[17] and the information for the Derry baptisms above is taken from transcriptions by Karen Duvall and Sue Mutton.
There are 1841 and 1851 census records that show miller James Derry and family living at Pencarrow Mill. James evidently did not remain at Caffa Mill[18][19] in Fowey for very long, because an 1861 census record shows him as a book deliverer living with his family at Old Hill in St Austell.

From the description of the enumeration district given in the 1861 census, it seems that the address "Old Hill" must have been on what is now called West Hill. The description of the enumeration district was as follows:[26]
Part of the Parish of St Austell, Leading from Lydia Kelley's corner in Kiln Lane through Workhouse Lane on the right hand side to the Old Turnpike, from thence all on the right hand or South side of the Old Hill, Fore Street and Church Street as far as Quinn's Hotel inclusive, thence through Hotel Street or White Hart Court to Kiln Lane or Mevagissey Street on the right hand side to Lydia Kelley's corner above named including all Houses within the above Boundries.
A map of St Austell from 1880 has Kiln Lane and Workhouse Lane marked, as well as White Hart Row (leading off Church Street).[27] Comparing with the Cornwall Council Interactive Map shows that Kiln Lane has become part of South Street, and Workhouse Lane has become Moorland Road, making it possible to see where the enumeration district was.[28]
There are also 1871 and 1881 census records showing James Derry and family still living in St Austell.
