Biography

Walter was born in 1532. His father's diary records: 1532 "Walter Hendle. Son of the above named Thomas & Eliza was born on St Oswald's Day between one & two in the morning Anno Dom 1532, being Hop Monday the 15th day of April, and his Godfathers were Robert Lamb, of Ledys Gentleman, and John Cromp of Otham, and his Godmother Rabeye Taylor, wife of Walter Tayler, of Ledys, and his Godfather, Walter Tayler, of Ledys, and his Godfather, Walter Hendle of Cranebrok Esquire at confirmation and he was married to Frances Hales, younger daughter of James Hales Knight, and Justice of the Common Bench, at Westminster, 23rd day of January, being Monday in the 6th year King Edward 6th (1553) aged 21 on the first day of Hilary Term, in London, in the Paris(h) of St Lawrence."[1]

A later entry covers his marriage in early 1554: 1554 "Memoir. That the 23rd day of January, in the 6th year of King Edward the 6th (1553/4), Walter Hendle my son was married at London in St Lawrences Church, being the first day of Hilary term to Frances Hales, youngest daughter of Sir James Hales Knight and one of the Justices of Comon Pleas at Westminster A.D. 1553 and the said Sir James did give with his daughter to her and to Walter Hendle and the longest liver of them both, the Manor of Dane Court in Bowiston under the Blean. At sometime Sir John Fogg's Kent and 10 pound by year of annuity out of his lands during her life, and 100 marks of money. And I give to the said Walter and Frances all my lands in Tenterden and Berstedd at Melyott and to the heirs of the said Walter yearly 20 pound, and more clear and 10 pound in money. 20 pound a year and10 pound in pennies."[2]

He was buried on 16 Nov 1577.
