Biography

John was a Friend (Quaker)

John Rutty was born in Wiltshire in 1698 to Quaker parents.^[1][2][3] He studied medicine at the University of Leyden and graduated as an M.D. in 1723. He moved to Dublin in 1724 where he practiced medicine and wrote numerous works relating to medicine, science and religion, including a valuable history of the Quakers. He is best known for his Spiritual Diary and Soliloquies, an extremely candid account of his internal spiritual life, which in accordance with the provisions of his will, was printed without alteration after his death. He was also the author of the second edition of the History of the Rise and Progress of the People called Quakers in Ireland, expanding on the first edition written by Thomas Wight. He died in Dublin in April 1775 and was buried in the Friends' Burying-Ground, Dublin on April 26.^[4]

He left a will which was proved in the Preogative Court of Canterbury on 14 June 1775. ^[5]

Dr Rutty was the subject of a memoir published in the Dublin Journal of Medical Science in a series Illustrious Physicians and Surgeons in Ireland. ^[6] He also features in the registers of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland as a licentiate of the King and Queen’s College of Physicians ^[7] and in the biographical files of Irish medical practitioners compiled by Sybill Kirkpatrick. ^[8]
