Biography

Rector John Hammond was born about 1651 in Gawsworth the son of John Hammond of Hatton He married Alice Lucy on 16 April 1689 at Prestbury in Cheshire He lived there in 1689 and died in Gawsworth about 1718

about 1651 to John Hammond The matriculation age (16) confirms the approximate birth date his siblings were born or baptised at Eaton under Haywood so a good bet. This place is close to Hotton in Shropshire

New evidence has been confirmed that John Hammond of Hatton is the father of this John Hammond as below Very little evidence showing for him he may have died in 1681 and there could be a will

He married Alice Lucy at Prestbury 16 Apr 1689 [1]

Buried at Gawsworth 15 Apr 1724 [2]

Was the Curate of St James Church 1683-1724

Further Research The Christ Church Archivist has come back to me regarding John Hammond's status He was a poor scholar which means he matriculated as a servitor who would have done menial jobs such as helping in the Library or waiting on tables. His father records his status as 'pleb' in the University matriculation registers and as a servitor would have paid far lower entrance fees. So his family although ambitious were not wealthy.

Received an email from the current Rector of St James's in Gawsworth and he confirmed the memorial installed by The Rev John Lucy of Charlecot his g grandson

In memory of Revd John Hammond and his wife 50 Pounds the interest of which to be given to Gawsworth poor ?

His brother Bernard Hammond bestowed over £3000 to his surviving brothers and sisters as well as various nieces and nephews Bernard's brother was none other than John Hammond Rector of Gawsworth and the husband of Alice Lucy of the prominent Lucy family who owned Charlecote Park Bernard married Rebecca Minton In 1710 at Eaton-under-Heywood

John Hammond 's and that of his brother Bernard are unknown. It Bernard was about 70 when he died before 9 February 1724 John died the same year Their siblings Paul was baptised in Eaton-under-Heywood on 14 April 1660 and sister Jane baptised same place on 13 December 1664 they were probably the youngest

He never married Rebecca Bayley a complete fallacy

Rector John was actually born in 1651. His father is likely not George but a John Hammond. Somehow or other this father John Hammond is associated with Hatton, Shropshire. Would love to hear from a lady named Margaret who was actively researching this line or anyone else who is researching John Hammond the Rector of Gawsworth.

Cheers, Jay Hammond
