Biography

Milberry had two sisters, Betsy and Edith, and a brother who was a minister and went south to Texas in the early days. James and Milberry had 10 Children.

1) Geraldine Hester Ann Sexton, was born on August 6th, 1841. She first married George William Gann on 2 Mar 1857 in Henry County, Tennessee, USA. He died during the Civil War while in the service of the Union Army. They had two daughters, Sarah J. and Margaret Adeline Gann. After his death, she married Samuel Scoggins on 1 Nov 1864 in Johnson County, Illinois, who was known to the family as Uncle Sam S., and she was called Aunt Puss S. One of their children, Charles, became a songwriter. Among some of his most popular numbers were "Dream On The Silv'ry Rio Grande,” "Where the Silv'ry Colorado Wends Its Way," "Baby Laughing In Its Sleep," "Can't Forget the Old Folks at Home," etc. Geraldine had eight children [2 with William Gann, 6 with Samuel Scoggins, and Samuel brought a daughter, Mary Alice, to the marriage. She was born to his first wife who had died]. Charles, Frank, Jess, Ollie, Ida, and Ralph. Geraldine and her husband Sam are buried in California. This family lived in Denver, Colorado for some time--went to California in later years. One son Frank died in August 1924 in Colorado.

2) Martha Jane Sexton, Who later married James Dunn. She was born June 25th, 1843, and Died in Abilene, Kansas. (no date)

3) William Harrison Sexton, Born February 24th, 1845. The family called him Uncle Willie. William went back to Paris, Tennessee, for his bride Aunt Lizzie. He homesteaded in the Acme Community in 1880. He died and is buried in Abilene, Kansas A note from family members on Aunt Lizzie. We'll never forget her. I think she was a Kentuckian and chewed tobacco and was quite old when we were just kids.

4) George Washington Sexton was born September 16th, 1847, in Henry County, Tennessee. Was known as Uncle Wash. He married Mary Elizabeth Russell. They had seven children. James M. Walter A. Lowry, Nellie A. Iva V. Mila Lee, and Jesse L. George and Mary lived in Dalles, Oregon. The final days of Mary were spent with her daughter and husband, Iva and Frank Fisch, where Mary passed away at Hood River, Oregon, and was buried at the Dalles, Oregon. He died in The Dalles, Oregon, on October 1st, 1927, and is buried alongside his wife, Mary.

5) James Taylor Sexton (Joan Sexton North) He would be my great grandfather. My children, Julie and Steve North, James Taylor Sexton, is their great-great-grandfather on their mother's side.)

6) Milton Joseph Sexton, born December 19th, 1850, in Henry County, Tennessee. Died February 25th, 1924, and is buried at Abilene, Kansas Cemetery. He was known as Grand Dad.

7) Isaac Arnold Sexton was born on December 26th, 1852. Died and buried at Abilene, Kansas. He was known as Uncle Arnel.

8) Felix Corbit Sexton, born April 13th, 1854, in Tennessee and died and is buried in The Dalles, Oregon. He was known at Uncle Fields.

9) Henry Clay Sexton, born on March 15th, 1856, in Tennessee. Died January 20th, 1918, and is buried in Abilene, Kansas.

10) Melissa Jennette Sexton (Nettie) was born on August 29th, 1860, in Vienna, Johnson County, Illinois. Died 1879 at Abilene, Kansas, and is buried there.

Milbury Sexton spent her last few years in the home of her son, James Taylor Sexton, near Acme. She passed away in September 1900 at the age of 79, after a short illness. She is buried in the 'old Sexton Lot in the Abilene Cemetery.
