L'Estrange Mordaunt, son of Henry Mordaunt and his wife, Ann Poley was born in 1572 at Lynn in Norfolk. In 1611, he was named 1st Baronet Mordaunt. [1]
L'Estrange distinguished himself as a soldier in the Southern Netherlands and it was presumably at this time that he married Margaret Charles, daughter of Peeter Charles and Marie Cheris of Antwerp in Flanders who was mother of his son and heir, Robert.[1] She was probably also the mother of his daughter Jane, who married Sir James Reynolds on 12 June 1620, and his second son Henry, who inherited his manor of Congham. [2]
He served as Sheriff of Norfolk 1606-1607 and was created 1st Baronet Mordaunt of Massingham Parva on 29 June 1611.[1][3]
His second wife was Frances Cheeke, daughter of Robert Cheeke of Debenham in Suffolk, and widow of Thomas Sotherton of Norwich.[1]
L'Estrange served a second term as Sheriff 1623-1624 and died in 1627 aged 55. He was buried at Massingham. In his will he described himself "of Congham" in Norfolk. Administration of his estate was granted on 10 October 1627.[1]
