Obituary

"Eugene "Dino" Turay, age 79, of Sheffield, Pa., formerly of Dayton, NY, passed away Veterans Day Nov. 11, 2010 at the TLC Health Network Lakeshore Campus. Born August 16, 1931 in Ludlow, Pa., the son of Alex and Maria (Marchak) Turay. Dino graduated from Kane High School in Pa. Class of '49. He joined the United States Navy in 1951 and was honorably discharged in Nov. of 1954, retaining the rank of Aviation Ordanceman Third Class. Eugene was discharged from the U.S. Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Fla. His naval deployments included Fighter Squadron One Seventy Three aboard the U.S.S. Wasp. Military awards and citations included the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal (one star), United Nations Medal, Navy Occupation Meda l(European clasp) and the China Service Medal. After Dino's discharge from the Navy, he married the former Emily J. Magnuson in St. Anthony's RC Church in Sheffield Pa., Feb. 20, 1955. She survives. Eugene worked for various companies in Western NY including the former Peter Cooper Glue Works, the former Moench Tanning a subsidiary of The Brown Group, both in Gowanda, NY. He then went to work for JN Adam Developmental Center, retiring as Maintenance Supervisor. Eugene and Emily were very active while living in Collins and Dayton, NY before moving back to Sheffield. Dino was the past Commander of the Ameican Legion Post 409 in Gowanda and was awarded "Legioneer of the Year" in 1995 after 26 years of dedicated service to the club; he was active in all aspects, chairing many commitees and serving on the club board sat on all chairs that led him to a 2 time Commander of the Post. If something needed to be done at the club there was a good chance Dino was ready willing and able to do it. He participated with the Post Drill Team and the Club's Honor Guard as well as being a part of the BINGO workers group. A 15-year Delegate to the Cattaraugus County Committee, he was Sergeant at Arms in 1989 to 1990. He also served for 15 years as Delegate to the 8th District and as a Delegate to the Department Convention for 10 years. Eugene was also a life member of the James Cruden VFW Post 5007 in Gowanda, NY, a 50-year member of the Gowanda Moose Lodge #1382, member of the Collins and Dayton Vol. Fire Dept. and a life member of the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen of New York State. Eugene, while in Gowanda, attended St Joseph's RC Church and attended both St. Michael's and St. Anthony's RC Church in Sheffield. Besides his wife Emily of 55 years, Eugene is survived by son Kevin (wife Teresa) Turay of Delaware Ohio, a daughter Mrs. Karl (Sheryl) Thuman of Snyder, NY. Grandchildren Nicole, Heather, Jacquelyn, Ryan and Stephanie; great grandchildren Avary, Jacob, Makenzie and Chase. Sisters Mrs. Walter (Pauline) Kafzyca of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Virginia Turay of Kane, Pa., and several nieces and nephews also survive. Beside Eugene's parents he was preceded in death by 4 brothers Nicholas, Michael, Peter and Steven Turay along with 2 sisters Mary Comstock and Ann Turay. Friends may call at the SCHINDLER FUNERAL HOME, 44 Center St., Gowanda, NY from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 16th A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wed. Nov. 17, 2010 at 11 a.m. from the St. Joseph's RC Church, 71 East Main St., Gowanda (meet at church). Interment to follow in the Sheffield Cemetery Sheffield, Pa. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 409, Legion Drive, Gowanda, NY 14070 or to the Dayton Vol. Fire Dept., P.O. Box 1, Dayton, NY 14041."
