Biography

Joseph A. McArdle had a long political career in Pennsylvania and was mainly known for his terms as a US Congressman and a councilman on the Pittsburgh city council.

Joseph Augustine McArdle was born on 29 Jun 1903 in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana in the United States of America. He was the son of Peter J McArdle and Margaret A Flaherty.[1][2] His family moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1905 when he was two, and that's where he grew up. Early on, his father was a labor union leader before becoming a Pittsburgh city councilman.[3][4][5]

Joseph married Margaret J Corrigan on 21 Nov 1934.[6] They had four children - one son and three daughters.[7] They lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Joseph worked as an insurance agent and a politician.[8][9]

Joseph died on 27 Dec 1967 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.[1][10] He was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh.[11]

Political Career

Joseph had a long political career in Pennsylvania and was mainly known for his terms as a US Congressman and a councilman on the Pittsburgh city council. He started as a Democrat, but switched to the Republican party around 1949 after clashing with Allegheny County Commissioner John Kane. Positions he held:[12][10]
