Biography

Claude was born in 1906, the son of Joseph Williams and Pauline Faulkner. His father, from Kentucky, migrated to Michigan and opened a retail liquor establishment.[1] Although the start of national prohibition on alcohol did not begin until January 17, 1920, Michigan approved a prohibition amendment to its state constitution three years earlier, in 1916.[2] Following Michigan's prohibition amendment, Lester's father worked his way west; in January of 1920, his father was working as an edger at a saw mill in Baker, Oregon,[3] and ultimately ended up in California. Claude married Amelia Yost (1909-1996) sometime before 1930, when they lived in Fresno, California. At age 24, Claude worked as a box maker at a raisin plant in Fresno.[4] Claude and Amelia had two children together and the family moved on to Kern, in Bakerfield County, where Claude found work as a truck driver salesman for Mother's Cake and Cookie Company:[5]

  2. Margaret May (1933-)[6]

Claude registered for the draft at the age of 35, in 1940. The couple divorced during the 1940s; Amelia remarried, marrying Clarence E. Sylvia in Kern in January of 1950. Claude remarried, marrying Virgia M. Harris (bc 1918) in Kern in July of 1961.[7] Claude passed away in Nevada, California at the age of 91, in 1997. [8][9]

The Last Name at Birth on this profile should be changed to the father's last name, "Williams." It is uncommon that a child would take the mother's last name if the couple were married, which Claude's parents were. All of the sources (provided in the bio) confirm that his last name was "Williams." Additional sources are available on Ancestry, but not so many on FamilySearch.
