He emigrated to South Australia in 1863, arriving as a midshipman aboard the ship "Murray".[2][3]
On 8 February 1873, he married Bridget Mary Jordan, daughter of Patrick Jordan of Adelaide.[1][2][3]

On 8 June 1893, he succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Goold of Old Court, County Cork upon the death of his uncle Sir Henry Valentine Goold, 3rd Bt.[1][2][3] From this date, he was known as Sir James Stephen Goold although preferred to keep his title private.
Sir James Goold died in Adelaide, South Australia on 8 August 1926.[1][3]
