Biography

Lydia Ballatt/Ballett was born at Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay, in late October of 1670, a daughter of Samuel and Lidia Ballat(t); she married mariner Capt. Thomas Gilbert in November of 1690. She died at Boston in March of 1708, and is buried in the Granary Burying Ground in the city's heart. Her husband was remarried, to the widow Mary Trowbridge, in late September of that year.

Research Notes

There are multiple records, and later reports, of the marriage date for Lydia Ballatt and Thomas Gilbert. Lydia's Find A Grave page reports 1693, which was originally copied into the data field of this profile; however, the Charlestown marriage record which appears atop the Sources below shows 1690. NEHGS offers that record (from Charlestown, Vol. 1)^[1], but also 1689 (from "The Gilbert Family")^[2], and as well, 1692 (from Torrey's "New England Marriages"; multiple sources listed)^[3]. As the first recorded child of this couple, Anna, was born in June of 1692 (see Sources), the 1693 date can be dismissed, as can a November, 1692, date; indeed, the 1692 date should probably be regarded as simply implying, "by 1692". The 1689 offering is from a secondary source. Therefore, the 1690 date, from a transcribed primary record, has been preferred in this profile.
