Michael Laffan migrated from Ireland to Australia.
Michael was born around May 1829 in the Village of Cappamore, on the banks of the Mulcair River, Doon Parish, overlooked by the Slieve Felim Mountains, near the City of Limerick, in County Limerick, Province of Munster, Ireland. He was the son of Miller, Thomas (Laffan) and Margaret (Hanley), who married on the 2 July 1828 at the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist, Cathedral Place, in the City of Limerick, Province of Munster, Ireland[1]. His baptism took place on the 2 June 1829 at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael, Denmark Street, in the City of Limerick, on the River Shannon, Diocese of Limerick, County of Limerick, Province of Munster, in Ireland[2].
It is not clear when he came to Victoria, but he married Mary McMahon Mahoney on the 31 May 1863 at Sydney Road, Faithfull's Creek, 15 kilometres from the Town of Euroa, in the Shire of Strathbogie, 148 km (92 mi) northeast of the Capital City of Melbourne, in northeastern Victoria, Australia[3]. During their union, the couple had the following children:--

On the 5 September 1895, at around the age of 66 (even though his death record states he was 60), Michael passed away at this home, 65 Tanner Street, Richmond, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The cause of death was certified to be Valvular Disease of the Heart, Fatty Degeneration with Dilation and Exhaustion over 2 months. At the time of his death, Michael was recorded as being a Retired Gate Keeper and his son, John (Laffan) of Tanner Street was informant to his death[16]. His burial took place on the 6 September 1895 at MGC-RC-Comp-R-No-561-563 at the Melbourne General Cemetery, College Crescent, Parkville, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The Headstone reads:--In Loving Remembrance Of MICHAEL Beloved Husband of MARY LAFFAN, Who Died 5th Sept. 1895, Aged 60 Years. Native of Co. Limerick, Ireland. Also Their Daughter ANNIE, Who Died 15th July 1886, Aged 3 Years. Also Their Beloved Youngest Son WILLIAM Who Died 16th June 1903, Aged 32 Years. Also Their Beloved Eldest Son, THOMAS, Who Died 10th August 1905, Aged 41 Years. Also AMY and ALICE, Beloved Daughters Of The Above, Who Lost Their Lives In the Sunshine Railway Accident, 20th April 1908, Aged 25 and 20 Years. Also Their Daughter MARY, Who Died 22nd July 1922, Aged 48 Years. And The Above MARY LAFFAN Who Died 4 July 1923, Aged 77 Years[17].
