Biography

Annie E. Foster was an English novelist who wrote under the name J.E. Buckrose. She was the author of forty books.[1]

Born about 1868 in Hull, she was the second wife of timber merchant Robert Falconer Jameson. They married in 1899 in Skirlaugh, Yorkshire.[2][3]

She died in 1931.[4][5] At the time of her death, she lived at The Orchard, Wymondham, Norfolk. She left the copyrights to her literary works to her niece, Jane Wales.[6]

Research Notes

The birth of Annie Edith Foster was registered in the Sculcoates district in the second quarter of 1868; the mother's maiden name was Tickler.[7]

She was living in Sculcoates with her parents - William H, 33 born in Hull, and Annie J, 25 born in Withern, Lincs - at the 1871 census. William was a Brewer. Of potential interest is that the two servants in the household came from Lincs, one from Withern.[8]

At the 1881 census the family, including Henry aged 9 and Mabel aged 7, both born in Hull, were lodging with a Gray family in Brading, Hampshire. William's occupation was "Land & Coal Mine Owner".[9]

In 1891 Annie was working as a Governess, and living with her mother, brother Henry, and sister Mabel. Her mother was listed as married, so her father was somewhere else when the census was taken.[10]

In 1901 she and Robert were living in Hornsea with two of Robert's children from his previous marriage. Also in the household were two servants - Louisa Leaming and Eva Harrison, both from Lincs.[11]

William Henry Foster married Annie Jane Tickler at Withern with Stain, Lincs on 9 June 1866. His father was Henry, hers was George.[12]

Annie Jane, daughter of George Riggal and Jane Tickler, was baptised at Withern in 1845.[13] One of her brothers was Thomas George Tickler.

At the 1861 census William Henry Foster was living with his parents - Henry 59 born in Hilston, and Ann 63 born in Hull - in Sculcoates. His father was a Wine and Spirits Merchant, William was a Wine Merchants Clerk.[14]
