Birth

Isabel Finnard, who as an adult went by the name Cora B. Finnard, was born at Scarborough, Maine, on 7 May 1852, the daughter of John Finnard and Abigail Ann (Foss) Finnard.^[1] See the Research Note below.

Isabel "Cora" Finnard married William Canada Hinds at Biddeford, Maine, on 28 Feb 1873. See the Research Note below.

Death

Cora B. Hinds died at Biddeford, Maine, on 11 Nov 1878, with her age at her death recorded as 27.^[2] She is shown as "Cora B.," one of the wives of William C. Hinds, on the Hinds family gravestone at Winthrop, Maine, with a birth date of 6 May 1851 and a death date of 11 Nov 1878,^[3], but she may not be buried there.

Research Note

The Hinds genealogy, which was published in 1899, says that Isabel Finnard was born at Scarborough, Maine, on 6 May 1851, the daughter of John and Abbie Ann Finnard, and that she married William Canada Hinds at Biddeford, Maine, on 28 Feb 1873. It also has a notation that William and Isabel Hinds' daughter Edith (born in 1876) "has furnished most of the records of her branch of the family for this work."^[4]

The Hinds family gravestone at the Glenside Cemetery in Winthrop, Maine, shows a William Hinds, with the dates 1849-1830, and his two wives, one of whom is "Cora B." with a date of birth of 6 May 1851 and a death date of 16 Nov 1878.^[3]

The published Scarborough reproduce a list of seven children of a John and Abigail Finnond born between 1838 and 1859, with a note that in the left margin of the original is written "John Finnard." They show the death of a John Finnard on 23 Aug 1867, aged 64. They show a marriage intenton of a John Finna and Abigail Foss on 8 Jun 1838 and the marriage of a John Finnell (with a question mark following his last name) and Abigail Foss on 1 Sep 1838.^[5] The Greenwood Cemetery in Biddeford has a dual gravestone for John H. Finnard, age 65, who died on 23 Apr 1867, and his wife Abbie A., age 72, who died on 13 Apr 1893.^[6] The list of children of John and Abigail Finnond/Finnard includes an Isabel, born on 7 May 1852, but no Cora Finnard.

The Maine Marriages, 1771-1907 database shows a marriage at Biddeford on that date for a William C. Hines and a Cora B. Finnard.^[7] Note that the date matches the claimed marriage date for William Hinds and Isabel Finnard from the Hinds genealogy.

Considering the above evidence, it is almost certain that the woman who married William C. Hinds at Biddeford, Maine, on 28 Feb 1873 was the daughter Isabel born at Scarborough, Maine, to John and Abigail (Foss) Finnard; that her birth date was 7 May 1852 instead of 6 May 1851; and that as an adult she also went by the name Cora B.
