Corporal Harold James Pannell was born on 18 Aug 1903 in Granville, New South Wales, Australia.[1] He was the son of Brigadier Ernest Pannell (1868–1941) and his wife Fanny Whitefield (1870–1959).
Corporal Harold James Pannell married Winifred 'Winnie' Mabel Arland on 4 Apr 1929 at North Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia.[2] They had one child during their marriage;
Corporal Harold James Pannell was a member of the Salvation Army and was a bandsmanwith the Brunswick Citadel band in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Corporal Harold James Pannell enlisted in the Australian Army in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 27 Jul 1940 as a Private (VX37513). At the time he was a clerk-general, married and living at Camberwell, Victoria, Australia. He had fair hair and blue eyes. He lowered his age by 2 years when enlisting.
He was allocated to 2/22nd Btn and was a medical corpsman and member of the Battalion band, made up almost exclusively of Salvation Army bandsmen. He embarked for Rabaul in the Territory of New Guinea on HMT "Katoomba" on 12 Mar 1941, disembarking there on 28 Mar 1941. He was promoted A/Cpl on 8 Oct 1941.
When the Japanese invaded New Britain in Jan 1942 he was captured at the Warangoi River and became a Prisoner of War, initially held at Rabaul. He died on board the "Montevideo Maru" when it was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of the Philippines on 1 Jul 1942, en route from Rabaul to Hainan where he was destined for forced labour.[3] https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/23808509/harold_james-pannell
