Biography

"On Pentecost 1897, Wawrzyniec (Lawrence) Mryczak, Mateusz (Matthew) Malica and Jan (John) Wachowicz left their home village of Trybochowce (...) for Canada. They travelled together until they reached Winnipeg, where they went their separate ways. Mateusz Malica and Jan Wachowicz decided to stay in Winnipeg, while Warzyniec Mryczak continued westward to Strathcona, when he travelled to to the Skaro district. Here, he became the first Polish settler."

Jan and Katazyna had with them, on March 21, 1897, six children: Rosalia (12); Jagniszka (10 1/2); Piotr (9); Wiktoria (5); Fransiska (3); and Filip (9 months). In Winnipeg, they looked for farm land and were "sold" and area of land in North Dakota by a land agent. After digging a well on the property and comencing construction of a home and working the land they learned that the land was no theirs to purchase. They were deceived by the land agent who could then not be found. They did not despair.

They returned to Winnipeg. Jan worked as a carpenter and Katharzyna laboured in farm gardens to earn the money they lost on the land deal. The oldest girls worked as servants in private homes in Winnipeg.

Mateusz Malica, who also lost his money on the fraudulent land deal, returned to Poland and then back to Winnipeg in 1899. The Wachowicz family and Mateusz Malica decided to travel west to join Wawrzyniec (Lawrence) Mryczak in the Skaro district. They arrived there in April 1899. They stayed in a small log cabin (...)

They settled in the Skaro district and they built a homestead on wilderness land. The family thrived and in the 1940s Jan and Katharzyna passes away and are now buried at the shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes at Skaro . The shrine was built with stones gathered from their homestead.
