Oren Samuel Penny was Sergeant Major, 27th Louisiana Infantry in the American Civil War. Before the war, he was a lawyer in Winn Parish, Louisiana.[1] After the war, he became a surveyor in Red River Parish, Louisiana. Oren kept a small journal and began a second one just before his recruitment into the 27th Louisiana. Camp Moore Museum acquired the diary in December 2019.[2]

Resident Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.[3]
Son of David and Lena Penny.[2] Husband of Catherine Saunders Bosley. Father of Arthur Stephenson Penny. Oren passed away in 1918. Final resting place in Springville Cemetery, Coushatta, Louisiana.[4]
