Thomas was born in 1851. He was the son of John Gordon and Dorothea Miller. [1] Estate: Knocknagarne, Ballysax, Curragh, County Kildare.
He was educated at Rugby School in the town of Rugby, Warwickshire, England before returning home to play his club rugby at North of Ireland F.C. (NIFC) and to work as a wine merchant. He only had one hand, his left, having lost the right one in a shooting accident.
He played for the Ireland national rugby union team. His first international test match was against England on the 5 February 1877. His last test match was against England on 11 March 1878.[2]
He has the distinction of being the only one-handed/armed man ever to play international rugby (union or league).
Thomas married 7 Jan 1890 Marie Louise Graham, 2nd daughter of Ogilvie Blair Graham of Larchfield, County Down.
