Biography

Fannie was born in 1850. She passed away in 1925.

The daughter of wealthy Maine landowner Jonas Humphrey Perley (1821-1892) and his wife, Frances Shepard Smith (1823-1885), Fannie was born in Portland in 1850.^[1][2] In 1870, her father's land was valued at $85,000 and his personal property at $10,000.^[3] Her siblings included:

She married Charles Louis Piquette (1844-1876), the son of Jean Baptiste Piquette (Piquet) and Angélique Campau, a surgeon and veteran of the American Civil War, with whom she had two children:

1. Marie Piquette (1876-1924)
2. Charles J. Piquette (1877-1907)

Their second child was born after Charles' death. With the intercession of William B. Moran, Charles had applied for a passport for he and his wife in 1876, and he died in Paris in 1876. Fannie received his pension in 1879; he was a surgeon with the 86th Infantry.^[4] It's noted on the U.S. Civil War Pension Index that Charles served with the 86th "Colored" Infantry.^[5]

Fannie married George Van Dyke in Detroit on September 8, 1881.^[6] George's and Fannie's children included:

George developed interests in Canada and moved the family to Essex, Ontario, where at least two of his younger children were born. The family returned to Detroit, although George continued to do business in Ontario. He died there of a stroke at the age of 58, and Fannie returned to Detroit.^[9] In 1920, she lived in Detroit with her son, Frank, and his family.^[10] She passed away there at the age of 74^[11] and is buried in the Van Dyke plot at Mount Elliott Cemetery in Detroit.^[12]
