Edward was a Friend (Quaker)

Edward was the son of Edward Fox and Anna Were. He was born at St Minver, Cornwall on 13 December (Quaker 10th month) 1749.[1][2]

Edward became a merchant, based in Wadebrdge, Cornwall.[3] He had interests in tin mining in the St Austell area of Cornwall.[4] In 1793 he (described as of Wadebridge, Cornwall) and Sir William Molesworth received murder threats from Cornish tinners who suspected them of illegally exporting corn.[5]

Edward married Mary Brown(e) at St Germans Quaker Meeting House, Cornwall on 7 June 1792. The Quaker marriage record describes him as a merchant of Wadebridge, Cornwall, son of Edward and Anna Fox of Wadebridge, both deceased; and her as daughter of John and Mary Browne of Landrake, Cornwall.[6] They had the following children:

In 1790 Edward purchased the Barton of Gonvena in the parish of Egloshayles, Cornwall. He built Gonvena Mansion and another dwelling there for the use of his wife after his death, and established ornamental gardens.[19]

In a draft agreement of January 1814 Edward is described as of Gonvena in the parish of Egloshayle, Cornwall.[20]

Edward died on 8 April 1817 and was buried on 14 April at Tregongeeves Quaker burial ground, Cornwall. The Quaker death and burial record describes him as a merchant of Wadebridge, Cornwall and gives his age as 67.[21][22]

Edward's will was dated 23 July 1813 and proved on 19 July 1817. In it he:[23]

  • described himself as of Gonvena in the parish of Egloshayle, Cornwall
  • named
    • his wife Mary, to whom he left his main real estate and other assets
    • his son Edward (making provision for any other children)

Mr Fox, by his will dated 1813 left Gonvena House to be sold by his brothers George and Thomas Fox and his friend Edward Coode gent of St Austell. (Edward Junior was only 17 or 18 at his demise.) In 1829 the forementioned executors sold the barton, mansion, etc.
