Gertrude Helen Strachota was born on October 1, 1907, daughter of Wenzel Phillip Strachota (1885–1935) and Adeline Anna Ida Kebel (1885–1940).

Trudy married Clarence Orval Barber (born on March 19, 1898 in Port Elgin, Saugeen Shores, Bruce, Ontario, Canada; son of Reid Barber and Phoebe Jane (Bacon) Barber). Their known son was Raymond Orville Barber (1932–2000).
