Arthur was born 26 Nov. 1780, the first son of Arthur Holdsworth of Widdicombe and Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Holdsworth, merchant, of Dartmouth. He was educated at Eton. [1]
His was a prosperous family. In 1725-1860 the award of 'The Waters of the Dart' from the Duchy of Cornwall entitled them to levy tolls on all goods landed between Salcombe and Torbay. The Holdsworths held most of the important posts in and around Dartmouth. The family home was Widdicombe House, near Torcross, built in 1785 and enlarged in 1820. They also owned Brooke Hall, Dartmouth."[2]
1803 He married firstly Elizabeth Were Clark on 8 Feb. 1803, daughter of Richard Hall Clarke of Bridwell, Devon with whom he had a daughter. Elizabeth died 1804 [1][3]
1807 His second marriage was to Catherine Henrietta Eastabrooke in Walthamstow, Essex. 16th July[4]
He had 3 sons and one daughter by his second marriage. [1]
He passed away in 1860. [5]
