Biography

Sir William Owen was born in Orielton about 1697 the son of Sir Arthur Owen 3rd Baronet of Orielton and Emma Williams.[1]

He studied at New College, Oxford.

He became MP for Pembroke Boroughs on the Orielton interest at a by-election. He sat in the House of Commons for 52 years from 1722 to 1774.[2]

c1750 Work commenced on Big House which would become the family home.[3]

He succeeded his father to the baronetcy in 1753 inheriting the family's seat of Orielton House.

He was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire 1761-1778

He married Elizabeth Lloyd at Grove 12 Dec 1725 and secondly Elizabeth Williams in Chester 26 Jul 1728.[4] He had one daughter by his first marriage and two sons and two daughters by his second marriage.[2]

Sir William was listed as a supporter of the Society for Promoting Religious Knowledge among the poor in the 1779 report which the charity published. The report on page 29 recorded him as Sir William Owen Bart. of Orielton, Pembrokeshire and that he had been a supporter since 1772 [5] His son Sir Hugh Owen (~1731 - 1786) was also a supporter.


He died at Orielton 7 May 1781.[6]

His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 9 June 1781.[7]
