No record has been found of the birth of Robert Hayes. The 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, said he was the brother of John Hayes and George Hanson Hayes,[1] who were sons of John Hayes and Mary (Hanson) Hayes. The 1850 Census shows him as 65 years old, born in Maine.[2]

Occupation
Robert Hayes is described as a Freewill Baptist clergyman in the 1850 and 1860 censuses.[2][6] Apparently it was a theological belief system and a vocation that he adopted in later life; the 1874 history of Livermore names Robert Hayes (and his brother John) among the men (presumably laymen) who had "labored faithfully for the upbuilding" of the Methodist church in that town.[4]
