German Families

Dr. Glenn Conrad wrote an an article about the Germans on the Ship Britannia and others that appeared in Les Voyageurs, Vol. III, No. 4, December 1982, pp. 85-88. This article corrected information that had been published by J. Hanno Deiler in "The Settlement of the German Coast of Louisiana and The Creoles of German Descent" - See German Settlers in Louisiana [Note: the article also contains additional information about the time at Espiritu Santo Bay and the overland trek].

The list of names is contained on pages 140-142 of Annual Report of the American Historical Association 1945, in Four Volumes, Volume II: Spain in the Mississippi Valley, 1765-1794, Part I, The Revolutionary Period, 1765-1781 edited by Lawrence Kinnaird. [Notes added by host].

Name and age: Nicolas Marcoff - 62 [Marhober - became Malborough, Malbrough, Malbrou], Channe, his wife - 45 [Note: Christine Ory] Jean George, their son - 19 Marie, their daughter - 15 Marie Madeleine (relation not given) - 12 Joseph Marcoff, their son - 10, Francois Marcoff, their son - 8 Jean Augustin Marcoff (5 months)

Origin of Acadians

Original Acadians were of French heritage living in northeast Canada, including Nova Scotia. After the British won the French and Indian War, the French Acadians were expelled. The first round of people expelled were sent to the colonies, namely Maryland. While some remained in Maryland, a number of families took another ship to New Orleans. in 1769, that area was a part of Spain. The newly arrived immigrants obtained land grants from the Spanish Governor and settled in what is now Iberville, Louisiana. [13]

On page 210 of the Berks Co. Church records by Rev. Waldschmidt ,he is listed as Marsober at the time of his marriage to Anna Christine Urich Owrey, Horry, Orich,Oree and Ory]. The records is as follows: page 210 Nicholas Marsober married. Anna Christine, d/o Frantz Urich, who was pregnant by him, on 26 August 1753, by Rev Waldschmidt. [14]

Nicolas is listed as Marhober in a different translation of the same record of 1753. This record was translated by Luther Kelker and was in the book titled "Baptismal, Marriage Records Rev John Waldschmidt Cocalico Moden Krick, Weisseichen Land and Seltenriech 1752-1786". [14]

In 1761 baptism record for a son [probably Joseph] he is listed as Marhoffer. "La Bretana" [1-05-1769], Nicolas is listed as Mancoff [Manhoffer]. [14]

He is referred to as Nicolas Marcoff in the research "Some Maryland Germans who settled in Louisiana", done by Director of the Center for Louisiana Studies at USL, Glenn R. Conrad. In his article, Conrad mentions that it corrects information from an early work "The Settlement of the German Coast of Louisiana" written by J. Hanno Dieler; in which Nicolas is referred to as Nicolas Markoff [or Mannhofer] and as Pierre Nicolas. In various church records in Louisiana he and family are listed as sometimes Marouff,Malbru, Malbro ,Mairouff,Mannhofer, Marphole, Maroffe, Marant , Maran. [14]

The family is listed as Nicholas Marcoff and Marie Christine Ory in records on their arrival at Natchitoches, Louisiana in Septemb er of 1769 from the presidio at Goliad,Texas, where they were forced to work by the Spanish. They were listed with 6 children: Jean George 1750, Marie 1754, Marie Magdeleine 1757, Joseph 1759, Francios 1761 and Jean 1769 born at Ft. San Antonio, Texas. Note that the birth date year of 1754 for Marie is probably correct, since her mother is pregnant in Aug. of 1753 when she marries Nicholas Marsober. Nicolas already has a son, Jean George, by the 1753 marriage date to Anna Christine Urich. A birth record for Jean George has not been found or a prior marriage record for Nicolas.[14]

On the death record [May 11, 1796 ] for his wife the following is written: Maria Christine Hourry [Ory, H'Ourry, Orvie], age 77 yrs. and widow of Nicholas Malbrou, native or "Natural"of Louisburg in Germany. Is this perhaps the Louisburg in Nova Scotia?[14]
