Death of Horace J. Burgan. On Monday afternoon occurred the death of Horace J. Burgan of Hudson, from appendicitis. It is but truth to say that the death of no one person could have brought more general sorrow to all that community. Horace Burgan was born in Hudson and it was his home all his life. He was a young man, modest, quiet, undemonstrative but of that honest, genuine, sincere timber that won not merely the good will of friends, but the affectionate regard of everybody who knew him, He was but twenty-six years old last fall, just entering upon the full enjoyment and usefulness of life. He was married two years ago next month to Miss Bessie Guiles, a lovely, little woman who in her young widowhood will have the sincere sympathy of many true hearted friends. Together their lives were most happy and now to the fullness of that happiness, comes to her a grief unmeasurable. Last Wednesday the worst was feared and his mother was sent for and before he died, his father, Mr. W. P. Burgan, arrived from Minneapolis. He leaves also three brothers, John, Harvey and Fred and a sister, Annis. Death came to him quietly and painlessly. It found him calm and prepared, the going was far easier for him than for those he left to mourn him, but to whom his life must always be a precious memory. The funeral was yesterday from his home, his father's old homestead which he had rented. It was very largely attended, nearly all the members of the Alexandria lodge A. O. U. W. of which he was a member, being among those present. There were many lovely floral offerings, the lodge sending a large bouquet of cut flowers. The pall bearers were all members of the lodge: J. J. Moede, Nester Robinson, Edward Robards, Lewis Westlund, F. C. Meade and Jos. Wettleson, Mr. A. S. Mason being in charge. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. M. Brown, of the Methodist church and the body was laid at rest in the Hudson Cemetery, amid the scenes he most loved. (Alexandria Post News, May 19, 1898, pg. 1, col. 5)
