Samuel was born in 1800.

The April 1861 census^[2][3]shows Samuel, with his wife Rachel Thomas, daughter Jemima Thomas, sons John Thomas, Samuel Thomas, Charles Thomas David Thomas and servants Emily Targett, a Governess, Elizabeth Davies, a Nurse, Elizabeth Thomas, a Housemaid, Anne Griffiths, a Cook, Maria Lewis, a Nurse, Gwenllian Thomas, a Maternity Nurse, living at Sguborwen House, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Samuel works as a self employed Farmer and Coal Proprieter and employs four hundred men and seventy boys.

The April 1871 census^[4][5][6]shows Samuel, with his wife Rachel Thomas, daughters Jemima Thomas and Louisa Thomas, sons John Thomas, David Thomas and Samuel Thomas and servants Eleanor Pugh, a Cook, Jane Jones, a Nurse and Mary Edwwards, a Housemaid, living at Sguborwen House, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Samuel works as a self employed Colliery Owner and employs three hundred and fifty men and seventy boys.

Samuel passed away aged seventy nine at his home at Sguborwen, Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales, United Kingdom on 24 April 1879. His passing was registered^[7][8]during the second quarter of 1879 in the district of Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan.
