Biography

Joseph Billings is presumed to have been born at Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay, about 1640 (estimates range between 1636 and 1642),^[1][2] a son of Roger Billings and a first wife, Mary, whose maiden surname is not known. Joseph, identified by H.W. Dana as "a mariner"^[3] -- though several generations of his family are known to have been tailors -- married a wife named Elizabeth, her birth name also unknown, by about 1668, based on the estimated birth of their son Joseph about that time.^[4]

Joseph Billings died in Boston by late January of 1678/9; administration of his estate was granted on January 28th. He was survived by his wife and by his son Joseph, but evidently not by daughter Elizabeth -- born in early 1672 -- as she is not named in either his will, nor that of his father, composed in 1680.^[5]
