August John Herman Kuehn was born as German on 23 Mar 1851 in Prussia, Germany. He was the son of William Karl P. Kuehn (1810 – 1904) and his wife Wilhelmina Krause (1821 – 1891).

He emigrated to America and farmed in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa and owned a grocery store in the 1880's in Iowa. The Naturalization took place on September 7, 1878.

He married first Augusta Louisa Dobbert (1858 – 1901) on 20 Jul 1881 in Plymouth, Iowa, USA. They had 6 known children. She passed away in 1901 of HD - Huntington Disease, an inherited family disease that also causes 2 of her children (William and Wesley) to die.

August remarried Julianna Dee (1856 - 1939) on 23 Mar 1903 in Makee, Allamakee County, Iowa, USA.

August passed away at his home after a several weeks illness on 17 Feb 1930 in Waukon, Allamakee, Iowa, USA aged 78.
