Dorothy was probably born in about 1636 in Hutton, Westmorland.[1]
Dorothy and her sister Jane worked as servants in the household of John Camm of Camsgill near Kendal, Westmorland.[2]
In the early 1650s, Dorothy and Jane, along with John Camm, became Quakers.[1] They were among the set of early Quaker missionaries known as the Valiant Sixty.[3] Dorothy travelled extensively in England, suffering several periods of imprisonment.[1] Her preaching was so powerful that in 1655 the mayor of Carlisle imprisoned her, fearing that she might "spoile a whole Cittie", and put a scold's bridle on her head[1] - an iron framework with a bit which was placed in the mouth to prevent movement of the tongue.
In 1656 Dorothy travelled to Massachusetts, only to be imprisoned and deported. She returned the next year, being imprisoned again and whipped.[1]
On 25 January (Quaker 11th month) 1660/1 (1661 in modern reckoning) Dorothy married William Lotherington at Whitby, Yorkshire.[4] There is no further record of major Quaker activity. She and her husband probably settled in Whitby, where their children were born. They had two sons and a daughter:
Dorothy was buried on 9 December (Quaker 10th month) 1666.[17] William Lotherington probably died in Whitby on 1 February (Quaker 12th month) 1673/4 (1674 in modern reckoning).[18][19]
