JOHN F. HARTWELL was born in Strong, Maine 19 May 1826 (HOA) and died in Plumas, California 4 June 1880 (History of Plumas County; HOA). He married 9 August 1857,ELIZABETH H[ANNAH] NORTON, who was born in Maine 1 December 1837 (Federal census, NARA; HOA has 1838) and was living in Plumas in 1910, daughter of Zebulon and Mary (__) Norton.

John “was a photographer in New York City; went to California [ca. 1856]; farmer; miller at Quincy, Calif.” (HOA). According to The History of Plumas County, California, John had a ranch consisting of 250 acres of meadow and timber land, and had a sawmill in American valley that cut about half a million feet annually. He was enumerated in Marysville, Yuba County, California in 1860; in Plumas, Plumas County, California in 1870 and 1880. In 1880 his household consisted of himself, his wife, three sons, one daughter, and two Chinese servants. In 1900 and 1910, Elizabeth was in Plumas County with sons, Louis B. and Frank J.; and grandson, Harrold E. Randall, age 6, b. in Wisconsin (Federal census, NARA).
