William was born sometime around May 1767 in Hungerford, Berkshire, the son of Edward Talmage and Mary née Blisset. He was baptised on Sunday, 24th May in St Lawrence's Parish Church, Hungerford. [1]

Marriages and Family
On Thursday, 25 August 1791, in St Mary's Kintbury,[2] Berkshire, he married Sarah Barnce. [3]
He and Sarah had three children before Sarah died in 1797, (see [4] for a possible reference to Sarah's burial, although this is in Warfield, 39 miles away). William married again on Tuesday, 22 November 1798. His new bride, Martha Herman, [5] or Harmon [6] was the daughter of Henry Herman (1752?-1832) and Jane Smith (1755?-1816?). Martha and William had another three children before Martha died in 1805, and William, aged 39, married yet again. His third wife was the 19 year old spinster, Amelia Coxhead, daughter of John Coxhead and Frances née Harris, both from Oxfordshire. William and Amelia were married in Ealing, Middlesex on Thursday, 24 September 1806, [7] and they had twelve children.
In 1813 he was a farmer and horse-dealer and lived in Hungerford on the High Street.
In 1814 he is also recorded as being a horse-dealer. Two years later, in 1816, he was a labourer, living in a street called Moon Lane.
According to 18th century maps, there were two southerly routes out of Hungerford, not one as at present. One ran due south from the Church, along the modern Church Way and so following roughly the line of Salisbury Road. The second road veered left at the top of the High Street along the old "Moon Lane' and Priory Road as far as De Montfort Grove. Then it continued due south, following the present public footpath, and emerged at Sanham Green Farm, to link up with the Inkpen road. It then continued to the south west until it joined up with the main road to Salisbury.[26]
In the national census of England and Wales on 6 June 1841, William, 78, Amelia, 55 and their youngest, a 2 year old (whose name is listed as ???ah in the transcription) were still living in Moon Lane. William was again listed as an agricultural labourer.
Census of 1841 - William Talmage, Resident of Moon Lane, Hungerford, Berkshire, England[27]
He passed away in the second quarter of 1843 and was buried on 25 January 1843 in Hungerford.

Notes
Immanuel's Baptism record states that his mother was Sarah, and that he was born in 1827. This cannot be correct, as Sarah died in 1797.
