James Solomon or "Sol" was the son of James Bennett Phillips and Catherine Hampton.
Sol, as he was known, was first married to Harriett Maranda McMahan, daughter of Thomas McMahan and Nancy Magdaline (nee Silver) McMahan, on 22 Dec 1892 in Yancey County. One child would be born to this union, Lydia Phillips. This marriage would not last.
He later married Rose Ellen "Rosa" Messer, daughter of Levi Solomon Messer and Margaret Cunningham, on 20 Nov 1898 in Swain County, NC. Performed by: H.A. Cunningham at the road fork near Thomas Joshua Calhoun's house in Nantahala. E. Phillips. K.A. Phillips, witnesses.
Immediately following his marriage, Solomon would enlist in the Spanish-American War while they were living in Almond.
In Nov 1899, he would file his invalid application in Tennessee. Then, in June 1901 Thomas Silver McMahan (former father-in-law) filed a guardian application.
It's unknown with certainty as to the exact date of death for Solomon but, he is not found in the 1910 census records nor was he living in Dec 1910 when his daughter, Lydia married.
