Biography

Mary Shippey, daughter of Thomas and Martha Shippey,[1] was the sister of Elizabeth (Shippey) Browne, Martha (Shippey) Stratton, and Thomas Shippey who married Frances.[2]
Mary married (1) John Clyborn and had a son, Thomas, born about 1684/5. She married (2) Thomas Newcomb. When she died in 1688, custody of Thomas Clyborn went to Jeremiah Browne, who had married her sister.
"p 267 4/1/1688 - Thos Newcomb, married relict of John Clyborn, dec'd & his wife now dec'd leaving Thos Clyborn, orphan of 3-4 yrs. Jeremiah Brown married an aunt of said orphan. Jeremiah BROWN awarded custody."[3]

Research Notes

Estimated Date: Her parents are said to have married about 1652, so their children were probably born over the next several years. Estimating Mary's birth based on her son Thomas being "3-4 yrs." in 1688 - assuming that Mary married at 21 and had her son - puts her birth about 1662 (rounded down to "about 1660" in the datafield).

However, Mary who married Platt was a sister of Martha, wife of Thomas Shippey who died 1684, and subsequently married Edward Stratton (father of her daughter Martha's husband). In Martha Stratton's 1696 will, she names both her sister Platt and daughters Martha Stratton and Eliza ("in her widowhood"), as well as granddaughter Frances Shippey (her son Thomas's daughter). See Research Notes on her husband Thomas's profile - Shippey-50 (d 1655).
