Biography

William Worfton (Wroughton) the son of William Worfton and Isabel (surname unknown) of Broad Hinton, Wiltshire, was born c 1366.[1]

His father died on 22 Feb 1392/1393 and William Worfton, his son, aged 27 years and more, was his heir.[2]

Marriage and Children

He married Margaret, a daughter of Thomas Beaupyne of Bristol.[1]

Children:

  • John (born c 1401, died 1429, married Isabel, daughter of Edmond Hampden of Hampden, Buckinghamshire, Esq., and widow of Thomas Ramsey Esq., and by her had issue – John, son and heir; Ann, married to Sir Richard Ludlowe of Deverell Longbridge, Wiltshire, Kt.)[3][4]

Career

Manor of Broad Hinton, Wiltshire: In 1365 Nicholas Wase sold it to William Wroughton. After the death of Wroughton in 1392 and of his wife Isabel (fl. 1404) the manor passed to their son William (d. 1408), grandson John Wroughton (d. c. 1429), and great-grandson John Wroughton (d. 1496). The younger John was succeeded in turn by his son Sir Christopher (d. 1515) and great grandson Sir William Wroughton (d. 1559). Sir William's son Sir Thomas held the manor at his death in 1597. His son Sir Giles sold it in 1628 to Sir John Glanville ....[5]

"In 1403 Margaret and her second husband Thomas Beaupyne settled Bawdrip [in Somerset] on their daughter Margaret, wife of William Wroughton".[6][7]

In 1404 William was noted in the Inquisition Post Mortem of his father in law Thomas Beaupyne.[8]

Inquisition Post Mortem of William Wrofton following a Writ of 6 Nov 1408.[10]

He held the manor and advowson of Didmarton, Gloucestershire, jointly with 'Alice' his wife, who survives him. Didmarton had been granted to William and 'Margaret' his wife.

He held the manor of Alwington in Devon.

In Somerset: By a fine of 1403 [CP 25(1)/201/33, no.28] Thomas Harewell, Robert Orchard and William Pynche conveyed the manor of Bawdrip with the advowson and 1 messuage, 1 carucate and 4 a. meadow in Chilton Trinity to Thomas Beaupeny and Margaret his wife, with successive remainders to William Wrofton, Margaret his wife and the heirs of their bodies, the heirs of the body of Margaret, the heirs of the bodies of Thomas and Margaret Beaupeny, the heirs of Margaret Beaupeny, and the right heirs of William Wrofton. Thomas Beaupeny died. Margaret his widow by an indenture dated at Bawdrip on 12 Dec. 1406 granted all her estate in the premises to William Wrofton and Margaret. By virtue of this they were seised of Bawdrip, Washford, Idson and Chilton Trinity.

In Wiltshire he held the manor and advowson of Beversbrook, the manor Medbourne, the manor of Woodhill by Wootton Bassett, and other lands.

He died on 4 Nov. last. John his son and heir is aged 7 years and more.
