Biography

Parentage

It is unknown who his parents were, although based on the patronymic "Claesz" we know that the father of Jan must have been named Claes.

His grandson, Jan Gerijtsz, was a churchwarden.[1][2] This was a position that was usually held by a "welgeborene" in this timeframe.[3] This indicates Jan Gerijtsz was most likely a welgeborene. Welgeborenen earned their title through their paternal ancestry.[4] This means the father of Jan Claesz was most likely also a welgeborene.

Marriage and Offspring

Jan is only known from the double patronymic of Gerijt Jan Claesz who lived in Rijswijk.[5] This patronymic indicates that there was a Gerijt that had a father named Jan Claesz.

Daily Life

It is possible Jan lived in Rijswijk, as that is where his son lived.[5]

His grandson, Jan Gerijtsz, was a churchwarden.[1][2] This was a position that was usually held by a "welgeborene" in this timeframe.[3] This indicates Jan Gerijtsz was most likely a welgeborene. "welgeborene" translates to "wellborn". Welgeborenen earned their title through their paternal ancestry. This means that Jan Claesz was also a welgeborene. They had certain privileges. In the 15th and 16th century their way of living barely differed from the "common people".[4]

In 1424 a tax registration was held in Rijnland. "Welgeborenen" had to pay tax worth 1% of their property.[6] "welgeborene" translates to "wellborn". Welgeborenen earned their title through their paternal ancestry. They had certain privileges. In the 15th and 16th century their way of living barely differed from the "common people".[4] A Jan Claesz was also mentioned in this tax registration. This Jan Claesz lived in Rijswijk and payed ¼th of a schild. According to J. W. Marsilje a Dutch schild was worth 53 groten in 1424.[7] This means the land of this Jan Claesz was worth about 1325 groten. This was equivalent to about 33⅛ Dutch pounds or guilders.

It is possible that the father of Gerijt Jan Claesz lived in Rijswijk and was an adult around 1424. In this case, because the father of Gerijt Jan Claesz was a welgeborene, it is likely that the Jan Claesz mentioned in the 1424 taxation is Gerijt's father.

Death

It is not known when or where Jan died.
