John was born in 1866. He was the son of Timothy O'Brien and Mary O'Dwyer. He married Marion Dora Cooke, daughter of William Henry Cooke, on 6 January 1891.1 He died on 15 August 1920 at age 54, without issue. He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Monmouthshire Engineer Militia. He gained the rank of Temporary Captain in the Royal Field Artillery. He gained the rank of Captain in the 4th King's Shropshire Light Infantry
