James (Berriman) Berryman was born in Cornwall, England.

James was baptized 14 Mar 1861 at Towednack, Cornwall, England. He was the son of James Berriman and Jane Rowe. [1]

The family emigrated to New Zealand on the Hydaspes sailed 10 Aug 1878.[2]

In 1885 he married Martha Mary Newsome. [3], and had at least 8 children:

  1. Frederick Newsome Berryman (1885-1889)
  2. William Rowe Valentine Berryman (1887-1951)
  3. Tryphosa Lilly May [4]
  4. Clarence James Messiah [5]
  5. Elsie Ruby Daisy [6]
  6. Allan Roy Stanley Berryman (1895-1941)
  7. Myrtle Inez Daphne [7]
  8. Malcolm Ira Cecil [8]

He passed away 2 June 1926 age 65 at 243 Salisbury St, Christchurch. "Lowed husband of Martha Mary Berryman, father of William, Clarence, Roy, and Inez Berryman, of Christchurch, and Mrs. J. Gregg and Malcolm Berryman, of Timary, and Mrs J. Buttery, of Sydney." [9][10]. The funeral was to Bromley Cemetery, block 39 plot 107. [11]. At the time of his death, James was recorded as working as a tailor [10].

His birth place is given as St. Just on the 1861 census, but Towednack on 1871.
