Biography

Michael H. Carney was born in 1902 in Nebraska.

Michael married Mary Frances about 1927. They had seven children:

1. Frank Carney (1938 - 2020)

In April 1930, Michael, Mary Frances, and their newborn daughter were living at 1925 North Market Street in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas, in a home they rented for $30 per month. Michael was employed as a foreman at the nearby Cudahy Meat Packing Company. Like most of the other families in the blue-collar neighborhood, they owned a radio.^[1]

In April 1940, Michael, Mary Frances, and five of their children were living at 318 Circle Drive in the College Hill neighborhood of Wichita. Michael was now a superintendent at the meat packing company. He reported he had worked the entire year of 1939 and had earned $2,500 in salary.^[2]

In 1942, Michael opened C&M Market, later renamed Carney's Market, on the corner of Bluff and Kellogg Streets.^[3]

Michael passed away at the age of 46 in 1948. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.^[4] Two of his sons used a portion of his life insurance funds to provide initial capital for what was to become Pizza Hut.
