Biography

Little is known of Nils Tingström's early life. Military records show that he was born 1721 and was from Östergötland.

Military service

Nils Tingström joined Östgöta Cavalry Regiment on 25 August 1745, at the age of 24. He became Ryttare (cavalryman) #47, of the 2nd Corporalskap (which was somewhat like a platoon), of Tjust Company , and he was provided with the ryttaretorp (cavalryman’s croft) called Hagen, which was under the rusthåll Tingetorp in Gärdserum parish.

The following year, on 31 Mar 1746, Nils married Maria Nilsdotter, the daughter of an innkeeper.

From the 1757 General Muster, which took place in Gamleby, we can see that Nils was born about 1721 and was from Östgötland (Östergötland County). His horse was a light-yellow gelding, black on all four legs, in its 21st year.

Nils was the first person from Ryttaretorp #47 to have taken the surname Tingström. This name was likely based upon Tingetorp, the name of his rusthåll.

Muster rolls for the Östgöta Cavalry Regiment show that Nils was in Pomerania for the years 1759–1762. During this time period, the Pomeranian War was being fought between Sweden and Prussia. This war was just one theater of the Seven Years’ War, a global conflict which affected five continents.

Muster rolls during his deployment show Nils in various locations in Pomerania:

• Postelitz in February 1759. This muster roll shows that 38 of the 125 cavalrymen of Tjust Company were sick, four had died, and several were "vacant" (including Nils).
• The November 1759 muster roll shows that two cavalrymen had been taken prisoner.
• The 1760 muster roll shows that the company was in Wrangelsburg.
• The 1761 muster roll shows that Nils and several others were sick in Stralsund while the rest of their company was in Gerdeswalde. Four additional cavalrymen were now prisoners of war.
• The 1762 muster roll was recorded in Gamleby, Sweden. However, many of the men in Tjust Company, including Nils, were still in Pomerania. Several had returned home, but many of those were sick. Four were still being held prisoner in Pomerania and at least two had died there.

Fortunately for the Tingström family, the roll for the general muster conducted in Västervik on 24 January 1763 shows that Nils is now safely back home, and he has a black gelding, 10 years old.

Sweden was at peace from 1763 to 1777, and the general musters of 1764, 1770, and 1774 all took place in Linköping. At the 1774 inspection, Nils’ horse is now 22 years old and did not pass inspection.

The 1778 muster roll takes note that Nils, age 56, was discharged 27 July 1776 after 31 years of service and has been replaced by a new ryttare. The horse has been replaced by a six-year-old horse.

When Nils was discharged from the Östgöta Cavalry, his successor was Johan Andersson, who took the name Johan Tingström. Even though Nils and Johan were not blood relatives, they were to become related by marriage:

• Johan’s first wife Anna Nilsdotter was the daughter of Nils, and
• Johan’s second wife Maja Larsdotter was the granddaughter of Nils via his son Lars.

Marriage and family

On 31 March 1746 in Gärdserum parish, Nils married Maria Nilsdotter, the daughter of the gästgivare (innkeeper) Nils Persson at Måshult (now spelled Mosshult).

Nils and Maria had seven children, all born in Hagen, Gärdserum parish. At least one of them died young.

• Nils Nilsson (16 Jul 1746 - 30 Jul 1749)
Anna Nilsdotter (19 Oct 1748 - 31 Mar 1809 in Tingstad, Dalhem parish), married Johan Tingström but died childless.
• Nils Nilsson (25 Aug 1750 - 9 Mar 1832 in Fivelsbo, Gärdserum), married Helena Andersdotter and had several children.
• Anders Nilsson (20 Jul 1753 - 4 May 1765)
• Lars Nilsson (27 Sep 1755 - 13 Sep 1820 in Lykenäs, Gärdserum), married Lisa Persdotter.
• Petter Nilsson (15 Jul 1764 - 13 Apr 1780), became a skräddare (tailor) and died at the age of 16 years.
• Margareta Nilsdotter (18 Sep 1769 - )

It is not known when or where Nils and Maria died. They are last mentioned in a 1783 tax roll that identified them simply as the svärföräldrar (parents-in-law) in the household of Ryttare Johan Tingström.

Research Notes

Speculation regarding Nils Tingström’s birthplace

From the muster rolls, we know that his first name was Nils and he was born about 1721, some place in Östgötland (Östergötland province). We do not know Nils' patronymic. Tingström was a name acquired later when he joined the military.

Many boys named Nils were born in the area around Gärdserum in 1721. But here is one possibility -- and it should be emphasized that this is currently pure speculation:

A Nils Nilsson was born in Önhult, Åtvid parish, 14 April 1721. The village of Önhult lies about 6 km southwest of Mosshult. Keeping in mind that Nils Tingström’s first wife Maria Nilsdotter was the daughter of the innkeeper at Mosshult, it is easy to imagine that if the Nils of Önhult is our Nils Tingström, he likely would have passed through Mosshult on his way to the ryttaretorp at Hagen in Gärdserum parish. So perhaps he stopped at the inn at Måshult, and met the innkeeper’s daughter.

It’s fun to speculate, but of course, this might be very difficult to prove. The father of the Nils born in Åtvid parish died before Nils was born.
