Biography

Mary Young was daughter of Lieutenant John Young RN who was promoted Captain on the day of his death in 1755. [1]

She married Scottish sailor John Brisbane [2] son of Thomas Brisbane and his wife, Isabel Nicolson, on the 11th of June 1759 at East Stonehouse in Devon. [3] They had five sons, John Douglas, Thomas Stewart, William Henry, Charles and James [2] and six daughters. [4]

Of her sons only Thomas did not join the Royal Navy and he joined the Army. [2] John was killed in 1782, Thomas in 1795 and William in 1796. [2][4] Charles and James both lived to raise families.[2] Of her daughters only Sarah Isabella and Hannah Maria are named in her 1817 will. [5]

Her husband, although he had already had his last sea-going command was promoted Rear Admiral on the 21st of September 1790. [4] John died in 1807 [2] on the 10th of December and was buried in the catacombs of All Saints Church, below bar in Southampton. [4]

On the 11th of October 1815 Mary wrote her will at Brighton in Sussex asking to be buried with John in Southampton and dividing her property equally among her four surviving children, Charles, Sarah, Hannah and James. [5] The will was proved on the 16th of May 1817.[5] Mary was buried at All Saints in Southampton on the 4th of May 1817. [6] The church was badly damaged during a bombing raid in 1944 and was demolished. The remains of all 403 people buried in the catacombs were transferred to a communal grave elsewhere in Southampton. [7]

Research note

Burke's Commoners does not know her given name and claims that her father was an admiral. [2] This is blindly followed by thepeerage.com [8] and thus on to the internet. [9]

No such Admiral has been identified. This profile follows "A Naval Biographical Dictionary" [1]
