Birth

According to the 1900 Census, Augusta D. Gibbs, the wife of Joseph M. Gibbs, was born in November 1864,^[1] and the marriage record of Mary A. Dow and Joseph M. Gibbs says that Mary was born at Bath, Maine, the daughter of James O. and Augusta Dow.^[2] The 1928 history of Livermore, Maine, identifies the wife of Joseph M. Gibbs of Earlville as Augusta Dow.^[3] See the Research Note below for a discussion of her mother's possible identity.

Marriage

Mary A. Dow, 22, operative, and Joseph M. Gibbs, 31, salesman, both of Boston, Massachusetts, married at Livermore, Maine, on 20 Aug 1887.^[2] In 1900, they were living at Livermore, Maine, with three children, aged 8 to 12, all born in Massachusetts.^[1]

Death

The gravestone of Augusta D Gibbs at the Waters Hill Cemetery in Livermore, Maine, is inscribed with the dates 1864-1932.^[4]

Research Note

An Ancestry Profile for an Augusta McMichael (1839-1864) says that she was Mary Augusta Dow's mother; that she was daughter of John McMichael and Hannah (McFarland) McMichael; and that she married James O. Dow on 14 Aug 1858. It cites no sources that confirm her parents, het spouse, or the marriage. If it is accurate, it probably means that Mary Augusta Dow's mother died in childbirth or shortly thereafter. An Ancestry Profile for Mary Augusta Dow says she was the Mary A. Dow, age 5, who was living with John and Hannah McMichael and with James E. Dow, age 7, at Newcastle, Maine, in 1870.^[5] John and Hannah McMichael would be her grandparents, if her presumed mother's Ancestry profile is correct.
